      tehran, july 1, irna -- commerce minister mohammad shariatmadari here on tuesday, addressing the commemoration ceremony of industries and mines day held in the presence of president mohammad khatami, said
      that the nation's industrial strategy should accord its growing trend towards being competitive on the world markets.
      he added that given the development of globalization, iran should strengthen its competitiveness in the field of industries and mines to attend global markets and that this calls for production of high-quality goods at reasonable prices.
      referring to the various tools that might currently be used to facilitate trade, he noted that for instance electronic trade can contribute to reducing end price and dropping in export costs.
      "today, the average value added in the field of industry in the world national gross product (gnp) exceeds 27 percent, while in iran it stands at 14.8 percent. to fill the gap, national determination and proper strategies are required."
      the minister said that stable hard currency rate, growth of negative or zero inflation in the targeted markets and high domestic production cost are among the factors interfering with export promotion in recent years.
      turning to the need for producers to secure consumers' welfare and rights, he said that the draft on protection of consumers right is currently being examined by the majlis.
      minister of industries and mines es'haq jahangiri, also speaking at the one-day conference, stressed the need for the nationwide industrial development and said that both domestic and overseas economic and political developments should prove the national movement towards industrial development.
      "industrial development is not subject to economic promotion. it is rather a phase of economic development and all economic strategies should be aimed at achieving it," he noted.
      jahangiri said that industrial development is a national issue which should be attempted by veryone.
      "if the public welfare, anti-poverty campaign, job creation and reduction of current gap with the world are the main objectives of the government, they can only be materialized with industrial development," he added.
      concerning the nation's industrial development strategy, he said that the related draft on such a strategy for the next 20 years has already been drawn up, but needs to be further assessed.
      he added that the draft is to be examined in the one-day conference scheduled for july 13.
      in the meeting, the official who drew up the text of the draft for the country's industrial development, masoud nili, presented a volume of the book to president khatami.
      jahangiri briefed the attendants on the performance of industries and mines sector within the past three years and said that the most significant reason for the boost of investment in the sector was the use of excess funds of the nation's hard currency deposit account.
      "the organizations affiliated to the ministry of industries and mines ceded around rls 2,356 billion worth of shares to the private sector in the past iranian year (ended march 20) and extension of shares worth rls 5,000 billion is predicted in this year's plan," he added.
      referring to the draft on industrial innovation, he noted that the move started with textile industry in 2001 and added that over dlrs 400 million worth of funds has been allocated to the sector.
      he declared the readiness of industrialists to take major steps towards the development of the sector and said, "if more proper grounds are provided, iranian industrialists will manage to make progress more readily and contribute to the boost of per capita income."
      in the conference, 31 industrialists, 13 miners, 13 projects and one highly-qualified miner received certificates of honor.
